The location has been known for years as “Heritage Hill.” It was built in stages over a period of many years. The “South Wing” of the old home lakeside was constructed in 1934 as a two-car garage. In 1948 the second portion of that building was completed. It contains a fireplace in the receiving room that was once used for cooking and heating. The “North Wing” was built in 1964 as was the original carriage house barn. Mennonite builders from the Gladwin area constructed these additions.
There are 127 of the original 160-acre estate. The guesthouse on the northern edge of the property was sold in 1987. Other portions of the original acreage east of US 27 expressway were also sold. The property was acquired by McKenna and Mlinarcik in late 1987. The landscaping and renovation of the old home began in Spring 1988.
Over the past thirteen years many “face lifts” were completed. A new front entrance and gate were constructed. Guide trail lights, paving of the parking lot and trail, barrier free entrances and extensive landscaping have added a fresh new look. Further, the facility was fitted with natural gas and sewer lines. The front thirty acres have an estimated 80,000 mature pines of various species which provide wonderful protection for a variety of wildlife, as well as great areas for walking. The back acreage actually borders route 27 providing four miles of cross country ski and hiking trails.
The old home lakeside is known as The Classic Collection. It has served as the retirement home for Mr. and Mrs. McKinley Browne, and quarters for a private business. The “South Wing” of this building also holds individual offices. A conference room on the lower level has been recently renovated. This room will comfortably hold twenty people with a self-contained bathroom and kitchen facilities for catering purposes.
The renovated carriage house barn was opened in July 1994 as the Carriage House Inn, Country Side. The first floor has the reception area, gift shop, kitchen and manager’s quarters. The soda counter and reception desk came from an old Knapp department store in Bay City, Michigan. The windowpanes separating the kitchen and receptions area are from an old building at Central Michigan University that was demolished. The gift ship provides a variety of unique and personalized lines including Boyd Bears, Midwest and Department 56. Also on the first floor, is the Great Room for casual sitting, meetings, breakfasts and receptions. In addition, there are three guest rooms: John Andrew, Suite McKinley and the Trapper Mac.
The second floor has four guest rooms and 20’x40′ lounging deck overlooking Budd Lake. The rooms include: Paraschiva, Maggie Mae, Helen Louise and the Theodore Madison.
The Carriage House Inn Classic Collection is a most gracious and comfortable two-story, six-room, built by Mennonite builders in 1964. It is especially well suited for close family gatherings, intimate getaways, or other groups of sic to ten desiring a private retreat and home-like setting.
The Classic Collection consists of a library, dining room, three guest rooms, two baths, a conference/training room and a private sun deck overlooking rolling lawns and scenic Budd Lake.
